Assignment: Describe a creature. One page.
The creature made his way to the opening of the cave. He peered out with his wide, gray-green eyes, and quickly ducked back into cover, with a sigh of disgust. The sun was shining fiercely through the trees, and it made his sensitive skin scorch and peel. He liked it so much better when it was raining, because then he could escape from his cave dwelling and gather food. The rain dampened and soothed his scaly, slippery gray skin. However, the time was nearing when the rain would come less and less, and the creature would have to retreat into the far depths of the cave, where the food was scarce. The creature was not like others of his area who devoured rodents and other living things; he preferred to dine on the berries and flowers that he found deep in the forest, far from his cave. They were so sweet and juicy, and were delicious when eaten while the rain poured down from the sky.The creature was a delicate sort; he did not attack or eat any other living thing. He stayed mostly to himself in the darkness of the cave, and he had never known any one else like himself. Nearly all of the other living things went into hiding when the rains came, providing little opportunity for the creature to make friends. Mostly, he spent the sunny days discovering new tunnels and hidey-holes in his cave, sometimes finding other ways out of the cave into new parts of the forest. His eyes were large and accustomed to seeing quite well in the darkness; this was another reason why the sun was much too bright for him. His ears, considerably large compared to the size of his head, twitched arbitrarily from one another, accustomed to the hushed sounds in the world of the caves. The creature had a slight, thin body, covered with dark gray scales - not the kind of scales that rub up and jostle each other, but the kind of scales that are joined to one another and if kept at just the right degree of moisture, are very slick and almost velvety to the touch. His arms and legs were long and slender, allowing him to crawl into deep crevasses in the cave as well as reach for the berries and flowers that were his favorite. He had claw-like hands with three long, skeletal fingers and a thumb; his feet were long and skinny and had four clawed toes each.
